Integrative Approaches to Chronic Pain

Many adults experience chronic pain and rely upon anti-inflammatory and prescription pain medications to manage the pain. Is there an alternative? Dr. Gaetano Morello, naturopathic physician, will discuss integrative approaches to treating chronic pain can bring deep and lasting relief.

A study by the National Institutes of Health found that more than one in three people in the United States have experienced pain of some sort in the previous three months. Of these, approximately 50 million suffer from chronic or severe pain. That’s a lot of people in pain.

Pain is not our enemy. As much as we don’t like pain, it’s critical for life. Acute pain protects our bodies from injury and reminds us that tissue is damaged and needs to be protected. Once the injury heals, you stop hurting.

“Chronic pain is different,” says Dr. Gaetano Morello. “Your body keeps hurting weeks, months, or even years after the injury. It can have real effects on daily life and mental health. Fortunately, integrative approaches to treating chronic pain can bring relief.” Some options include natural medicine, relaxation therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, and lifestyle changes, such as getting enough sleep and not smoking.

Recently Dr. Morello has been appointed as a Naturopathic Clinician at the newly created Complex Chronic Disease Program located at BC Women's Hospital in Vancouver and is successfully treating people with chronic pain. He is the first N.D. to hold such a position at a major North American hospital.
